💙 Negative Self-Talk

I’m scared, are you?

Negative self-talk. You know, the voice in my head I’ve talked about before: the one that tells me I’m not good enough, that I’m not pretty enough or not smart enough, or that I’m a “has-been”—that nasty voice—it has a purpose.

The purpose of that negative self-talk, that asshole voice in my head, is actually there to keep me safe.

the purpose of negative self-talk

I can see now that the voice stops me from doing the things I really want to do. Most of these things are outside my comfort zone.  The voice stops me so I don’t feel negative feelings like anger, fear, worry, doubt, sadness, and hurt. It’s kind of a double-edged sword; really, to be honest with you.

The life you want, the life that I want, as I’ve heard many people say—is right outside our comfort zone.

Our job is to get outside our comfort zone to make the life we want a reality, and yet, there’s this voice in the head that keeps telling us not to go for it. The voice can tell us not to leave a situation that doesn’t feel good, to not take the job that’s a little bit scary, or to do nothing to break through our fears. But the voice in the head is really trying to be your ally. It really wants you to stay safe, and comfortable, and feeling good.

The other side of the coin is that it actually doesn’t feel safe to be inside your comfort zone; to not produce the results you want, to not live the life you want, or to not experience the love you want.

I have to be strong enough mentally to tell the voice in my head, “Thank you very much for trying to protect me, and now I don’t need you anymore. I’m a grown up. I can make my own decisions. I see what I want, I know how I want to feel, and I'm going to push past these fears, and I’m going to go get that for myself.”

Funny how the job of the voice inside your head is to keep you safe, and protect you, and keep you inside your comfort zone, and yet everything you ever wanted in your life is outside your comfort zone.

The one person you have to fight to get it is you.
